RANK #49 NATIONALLY — 621 REPORTED SIGHTINGS
North Dakota's sparse population of approximately 775,000 means its 621 sightings represent a meaningful per-capita rate. Minot AFB and Grand Forks AFB both operate within the state, making it one of only a few states with two active major Air Force installations.
Minot AFB houses both B-52 Stratofortress bombers and the 91st Missile Wing's Minuteman III ICBM silos spread across 8,500 square miles of western North Dakota. In 1966, F-106 jets scrambled from Minot pursued UFOs that were simultaneously tracked on radar — an incident documented in Project Blue Book files.
North Dakota's Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Badlands provide exceptional dark skies and have produced consistent reports from park visitors.
Consistent with national patterns, North Dakota witnesses most frequently report orb and light phenomena, followed by triangular and disc-shaped objects.
