RANK #11 NATIONALLY — 4,123 REPORTED SIGHTINGS
Michigan ranks 11th nationally. Selfridge Air National Guard Base near Detroit and K.I. Sawyer's historical operations in the Upper Peninsula contribute to military activity. Lake Michigan and Lake Superior's vast water surfaces have produced notable marine UAP reports over decades.
The 1994 Lake Michigan radar case — in which FAA radar tracked unknown objects over the lake for hours across multiple facilities — remains one of the most extensively documented multi-radar UAP events in American history. Air National Guard jets were scrambled but could not intercept the objects.
Michigan's Upper Peninsula, with some of the darkest skies in the eastern United States, produces consistent high-quality reports from isolated communities along the Lake Superior shoreline.
Consistent with national patterns, Michigan witnesses most frequently report orb and light phenomena, followed by triangular and disc-shaped objects.
