RANK #23 NATIONALLY — 2,654 REPORTED SIGHTINGS
Iowa's extensive agricultural plains provide exceptional dark-sky observation conditions. The state ranks higher per-capita than its absolute count suggests. Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and the Iowa Air National Guard generate regular military activity.
The Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor shows elevated reporting, as do rural southwest Iowa communities near the Missouri border. Iowa's farming communities — which often work outdoors at night during harvest season — provide a significant nighttime observer population.
The Des Moines metropolitan area drives the largest absolute count, but rural northwest Iowa near the South Dakota border shows some of the state's highest per-capita rates.
Consistent with national patterns, Iowa witnesses most frequently report orb and light phenomena, followed by triangular and disc-shaped objects.
